Is the sentence in blue OK?

Because a few native speakers told me that it sounds as if it is the shirts, and not the person, that will do the ironing..

That is stretching the meaning a bit!

If you intended that meaning you would probably say "shirts that do ironing".

English is an analytical language and you have to go for the obvious meaning in the context. I

How about:

The shirts are in need of ironing.

I need the shirts ironing.

I'd say "I need the shirts ironed"

Yes, why not for the first one, but I think "the shirts need ironing" or "the shirts want ironing" would be more frequent.
