It's difficult to give reasons for pronounciation. Best I can do is say that the different pronounciations sound better to different people. Compare American to British, there's tomato, privacy, advertisement, etc.

Compare American to British, there's tomato, privacy, advertisement, etc. Even in American there are differences in pronounciations depending on the region.

I pronunce it something like ee rak. None of these pronunciations are the same as the way Iraqis call their country, Araq, so I think none of them has a previlege over the other. However, it's not the case with Iran. In Nort America, it is pronunced either as eeran, or airan. The first variation is what it is called in Persian, so I guess the tendency should be towards eeran! I pronounce it "ir-rock", where "ir" is as in the word "spirit". (I may be in the minority, however!)
