Invoice vs. Payment Request

What exactly is the difference between invoice and payment request? I have received an invoice from a company and I now need to ask for further information. Can I refer to their payment request or is the only possible word in this context "invoice"?
Thank you in advance

Hello! I'd say you first receive an invoice, and if, say 3 months later you still haven't paid, then you're bound to receive a payment request. The latter sounds to me more urgent than "invoice".

I would take 'payment request' to mean the form you fill in when you request either an advance or a reimbursement.

In your case, Guest, if you've received an invoice, and the document clearly says 'invoice', I'd be inclined to refer to their 'invoice'.
