"inviting sbd along"

What does 'inviting sbd along' mean as in 'Thanks for inviting me along today, it was great fun'? Does it imply that a person is thankful for being invited to a place such as the movies? Can it also mean being invited to a person's home?

Thanks

If A is going to and he has invited John to come along, he is asking John to join him. But it doesn’t mean that the host is paying for the trip.

If A is inviting John to his birthday party, it’s understood that John is not paying for the food and drink, but he should have the cognizance to bring a present.

GoodmanI was invited to John's house for BBQ last weekend and I brought my nephew to come along.

I brought my nephew to come along.

You are right we can take out "to come", But I don't think it's wrong either to include it in the sentence. Don't ask me why but it sounds to me that way.

Well take it from me it is clearly wrong.

Mr. Huevos,

It’s very convenient to offer a “one-liner” criticism. I don’t mind it if it’s the constructive kind. Yes, I said “I don’t think it’s wrong” grammatically. If you are so strong in your belief that it’s, then can you enlighten me with an explanation?

It is wrong, I'm afraid.

I invited my nephew to come along. Invited X to - ok, and can be followed by all manner of things.

or

I brought my nephew along.

but not

I brought my nephew to come along. Brought X to - this means that the purpose you brought them was to 'X'. You didn't bring your nephew for the purpose of attending, that's a bit circular!

Ok, I’ll buy that, thanks Nona!

No. I can't imagine the following scenario.

Leaving someone's home, to which you have been invited: Thank you so much for inviting me along. (meaning for inviting me to your home).

There has to be some "going somewhere together with" or there is no "along".
