I brought my nephew to come along. Brought X to - this means that the purpose you brought them was to 'X'. You didn't bring your nephew for the purpose of attending, that's a bit circular!

Leaving someone's home, to which you have been invited: Thank you so much for inviting me along. (meaning for inviting me to your home).

There has to be some "going somewhere together with" or there is no "along".
