Inviting applications...

I noticed a recent trend on job postings globally: The phrase "we are inviting applications" is so commonly used, but it doesn't quite sound right. I was under the impression that invitations were for people, not objects (you are invited to an event / to do something). And as far as applications (and other documents) go, shouldn't the appropriate term be "accepting"?
