Inversion of adverbial structure

A thick book lay on the table.

? On the table lay a think book.

I learned that the sentence above is the basic way that inversion after an adverbial is usually used.

But how about the sentences below? Of three sentences(<1>, <2>, <3>), which one is correct?

Is it possible to use all three sentences? I don't know. Please, help me.

A beautiful girl was lying on the beach.

? <1> On the beach was lying a beautiful girl.

? <2> On the beach was a beautiful girl lying.

? <3> On the beach a beautiful girl was lying.

The standard inversion is #1. Possible also is #3. And #2 is possible only if there is further content ( On the beach was a beautiful girl lying on a paisley Cannon towel ).

  • The standard inversion is #1.
  • Possible also is #3.
  • And #2 is possible only if there is further content ( On the beach was a beautiful girl lying on a paisley Cannon towel ).
  • What is more important to note, however, is that such inversions are usually limited to literary uses and are not standard formations of the daily language of communication.

I don't know how to express my gratitude to you. However hard I tried, I couldn't find any materials that explained clearly about the problems I had. Thank you again.
