Inversion in storytelling

Dear teachers,

when writing an adventure story we often use spoken language to make the text more vivid. But is inversion possible here?

Let's take the following context which is not "adventurous" but just for the purpose of illustrating the matter.

The young man put some of the rings he had stolen out of his bag. Three, four, .... ten rings did he put on the table. Then, finally, the old man nodded and he was free to go.

did he put or he put?

Top answer

Asterix The young man put some of the rings he had stolen out of his bag. The young man took some of the rings he had stolen out of his bag. Asterix Three, four, ....

  • Asterix The young man put some of the rings he had stolen out of his bag.
  • The young man took some of the rings he had stolen out of his bag.
  • Asterix Three, four, ....
  • ten rings did he put on the table.
  • Yes, you can do this, but only if the whole story is told in a similar old-time style, like a nineteenth-century translation of a Danish fairy tale or something.
