Grammar

inversion

1. Not only do weather warnings save crops but they may even save lives.
2. Not only weather warnings save crops but they may even save lives.

I think you'd say #1 sounds undoubtly OK.
What about #2? Does it sound a little off compared to #1? Or will you say #2 is wrong?
Some people make a grammar question with this inversion matter: if "not" comes in the beginning of a sentence inversion takes place.
That's why I ask this question. I want to know whether #2 sounds a little off but acceptable grammarically or #2 is just wrong.

Number 2 is dead wrong. A sentence that begins that way ends differently: "Not only weather warnings save lives but also well-trained emergency services."

The following variation is correct, or the inverted version.

Weather warnings not only save crops but they may even save lives.

#2 is not correct to my ear.
