Hadn't he gone, ...

are they the same in inverted form?

They are both inverted forms and mean the same thing. The normal forms are

If he had not gone...
and
If he hadn't gone...(contracted form)
respectively.

The meaning remains the same regradless of the form used.

The contraction is not possible in this form of the conditional..
