Inversion?

Hey everyone!

I have read these two sentences in a forum (http://forum.dict.cc/forum-questions/detail-463267-as-as.html ) and I was wondering which one is correct:

1) As fluent as he was in Italian, just that clueless he was regarding Italy.

2) As fluent as he was in Italian, just that clueless was he regarding Italy.

Do we have to use the inversion after "clueless"? If yes, is there any reason why?

Thank you very much in advance!

  • Yes.
  • Consider that you could say, As fluent as he was in Italian, he was just that clueless regarding Italy.
  • But if you invert by placing clueless in front of the subject of the clause, it makes sense to invert the subject and verb as well to be consistent.
  • Sentence 1 is not consistent in this way.
