Inversion

Today's question is as follows:

1. Above the fireplace was a portrait of the Duke.

2. Above the fireplace there was a portrait of the Duke.

Is there any difference between them? Are they both correct?

Thank you.

Both are fine and there's no difference in meaning. The first sentence has the same word order (inversion) that is the norm in other Germanic languages. CB

I have seen so many examples of "so + adj + inversion", but I have not met an example of "so + adv + inversion".

Have you seen this inversion before? Is it grammatical?

A)So quickly has he run that he finishes first in the race.

B) So quickly did he run that he finished first in the race.

B) So quickly did he run that he finished first in the race.

Those are fine, too-- though they are rather literary.
