Inversion

0 01font00A. To these causes may our disasters be attributed.02br
00B. To these causes may every one of the disasters be attributed that have come upon us.02font

00Hello. According to Fowler, sentence A01b00 02b00violates the rule of balance inversion, namely, the subject should stand absolutely at the end. He says if the subject were "every one of the disasters that have come upon us" instead, the inversion is satisfactory.02br
00So is B the correctly inverted sentence? 02br
02br
00He also says the following inversion is wrong:02br
01font00D. Much deeper down than the history of the human race must we go to find the beginnings of these connections.02font02br
02br
00He states that "if the verb is compound, the subject must be long as well as emphatic" and that in the above sentence,"we do not mend matters much by substituting 01i00lie 02i00for 01i00must we go to find02i00." Could someone explain what he's saying with 01i00lie 02i00and 01i00must we go to find02i00? 02br
02br
00Thank you0-

0Well, Fowler is a little out of date now, and I imagine that many of his suggested inversions would be considered overprecious, but:02br 02br 001-- B is not a correct correction of A. Fowler is saying that A should read '01i 00To these causes may be attributed 01b 00our disasters02b 02i 00'-- thus placing the subject, 01i 00disasters02i 00, at the absolute end. g.

  • g.
  • go02i 00 -- 01i 00to find02i 00 is just a verb complement).
  • However, what he wants to say (I think) is that in D, 01i 00must we go to find02i 00 is wrong, and equally wrong would be 01i 00must lie02i 00.
