Inversion

0 I have a question about reported speech. 02br
00He said,"the meeting will begin at 3:00pm." 02br
00Now it is 1:00pm. The indirect sentence should be " He said that the meeting would begin at 3:00pm." ( a ) or "He said the meeting will begin at 3:00 pm." ( b )?Are they both correct? 02br
00I feel they both are correct. When talking about the meeting, the statement "The meeting will begin at 3:00pm" still holds true, as it is 1:00pm; when talking about what the person said, ( b ) is the correct choice, as it is what he said before now,1:00pm. but if both are true, what is the criteria for "tense backshift"? Thank you very much. 0-

0I guess you mean 'regression'? 02br 02br 00Yes, you are right, and both are correct, for the reasons you state. , however, and the meeting failed to start on time, only the 'would'-- the backshift-- would be appropriate.

00Yes, you are right, and both are correct, for the reasons you state. If it is past 3 p.m., however, and the meeting failed to start on time, only the 'would'-- the backshift-- would be appropriate. 02br
