His intense longing for privacy was understandable in the circumstances.

Is it correct and the same to say the followings instead of the above? Thanks.

His strong longing ... under the circumstances.

This is really a tricky problem. I have come across this many times but I still have trouble distinguish the two words.
Could you shed more light on the reason that "under the conditions" doesn't work? Thanks again in advance.

'Conditions' seems to ask for some sort of elucidation, e.g. 'under the conditions of the trial', ' in the conditions he had to endure'.
