Introduction vs preface

Hi. What is the difference between preface and introduction? I have seen both of them used at the begining of books or academic thesis.

Thanks

They can overlap, I suppose, but an introduction (obviously) usually introduces the topic of the book, an overview of the field, and/or a summary of what is coming. A preface generally offers information about the author, why he chose the topic, whom he wishes to acknowledge, etc.

There is even a third word, "foreword". The following explanation is from an American dictionary:

INTRODUCTION, FOREWORD, PREFACE refer to material given at the front of a book to explain or introduce it to the reader. A FOREWORD is part of the front matter and is usually written by someone other than the author, often an authority on the subject of the book.
