Letter Writing

Introductary sentence of an unexpected letter

Can you give me some examples of an introductary sentence of an unexpected letter? It has to be polite as it's a letter from a parent to the school headmaster. Also, is it better to write "Dear (name of the Principal)" rather than "Dear Principal?" ?
