Introducing a quote, is this sentence a run-on?

Is this sentence too long?

Jack, as a dictator, disliked the idea of democracy and felt as though his opinion was the only one that really mattered, “we don’t need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. What good did Simon do speaking, or Bill, or Walter?” (Golding, 110-111).

How would I know whether to use a comma or a colon in this situation when i'm introducing quotes?

Hi,

Jack, as a dictator, disliked the idea of democracy and felt as though his opinion was the only one that really mattered, “we don’t need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. What good did Simon do speaking, or Bill, or Walter?” (Golding, 110-111).

With this particular wordig, I'd just put a period after 'matter
