Intransitive usages of the verb 'take'

One of my English reference book presents the following examples as intransitive usages of the verb "take", and I looked for the usages in several online dictionaries, but I couldn't find the usages.

1. He takes as heir.
2. Salmon took well that morning.
3. The queen in chess takes at any distance in a straight line.
4. The fire took rapidly.
5. The ink takes well on cloth.
6. The play took from its first performance.
7. Nothing took from the scen's beauty.
8. It little takes from his true merit.

I was wondering if I have to go on reding this book.
I'd like to know if you have ever seen such usages as shown in my examples.
