Please advise if the stress on the boldface below change the meaning of the sentence. What on the right-and side of the equal sign is my guess.

1. What would you like? = What exactly would you be happy with?

2. What would you like? = If you were offered a choice, what would you like?

3. What would you like? = The others have ordered. You?

4. What would you like? = normal question.

1. I didn’t hire Jane. = Someone else hired her.

2. I didn’t hire Jane. = I didn’t. The statement is not true.

3. I didn’t hire Jane. = I may have interviewed her, but I didn’t decide to hire her.

4. I didn’t hire Jane. = I hired someone else.

1. Where can we go? = ??

2. Where can we go? = We are not allowed to go anywhere. Is there any place we are allowed to go?

3. Where can we go? = They can go there. What about us?

4. Where can we go? = normal question.
