Into,in/onto ,on

can u please help me with the difference,with a good explanation,i know that onto and into are for movement,"i walked into the house"but i have read that u would say "i spilled the coke on the rug"and that"the kid threw the pot onto the floor"why ??i think that both can use on ,no?how do i know the real difference?
