I understand the basic usage rules for into versus in to, which regarding location or transformation (ex. He jumped into the taxi.; She turned into a frog.), but I'm having trouble with this specific sentence:

Thank you for the thought you put into helping me.

or

Thank you for the thought you put in to helping me.
