Into the pyre

According to Hindu traditions, women jump into the (funeral) pyre.

Is it 'in/into the pyre' or 'on/onto the pyre'? Which is correct when we use the word pyre?

Hi, My dictionary has pyre: a heap of combustible material. That seems to justify 'onto', which is what I usually hear. Clive

So it is 'jumped on/onto the pyre', then. Thanks, Clive.
