Interview

Dwight Howard was being interviewed on TV and was asked, "how did you shoot so well at the free throw line tonight":

He said," That is what I tried to do tonight, focus on my free throw shooting." Or was it

He said, "That was what I tried to do tonight, focus on my free throw shooting."

I think it should be was since the game was over when he said it.

No. It doesn't have to be was. Note the timelessness and abstraction of "That is". That is, was, and always will be "what he tried to do that night". The usual choice in these cases is "That is what/where/how ...". Note the noun clause after "That is".
