intervene + ing?

Youngsters who have parents who intervene inappropriately offering advice, removing obstacles and solving problems wind up as anxious, narcissitic young adults. Is it possible to use intervene + ing? I thought it should be intervene in ing?

Top answer

These are not gerunds following 'intervene; they are a participles. I would insert a comma after 'inappropriately'.
