Interrogative sentence pattern

Hi!

Could someone please explain the rule behind using "Why do you think she is going home?" instead of "Why do you think is she going home?" We know that the first is correct, but we can't really explain why.

Thanks much!

I cannot find the reference at the moment, but consider this:

A: 'She is going home'
B: 'Why do you think that?'

Welcome to EF! I find it very odd that you are looking for a rule for this. Why on earth? There is only one question: Why do you think? No one is asking whether "she" is going home or not. If the sentence read: I think she is going home, would you wonder why we don't say: I think is she going home?
