Interrogative composition

Hello,

I've ben teaching my students that the best way to ask something meaning is by saying the following question:

- what does someting mean?

However, I know there are other ways of asking such question, as follow:

- What is the meaning of ''something?

or

- What is something?

My question is: which of these questions sounds more natural or appropriated to a native speaker ear?

Thanks
