After hearing such wonderful reviews about the concert, they were rather ____ when they went themselves....

The answer according to the book is disappointed; but I don't get the whole idea apparently because I don't know what "went themselves" means; is it an idiom or something? Can anyone please explain it to me?

Thanks

This is likely a situation where a particular concert is repeated for more than one occasion, like a movie, or a play. Reviewers have described the performance in positive terms, making it seem like a worthwhile experience. 'They' here seems to refer to some people who have heard the reviews, and have decided to go to one of the performances.

Out of context, one might have thought 'they' referred to 'the reviewers', which would be puzzling.
