interpretation (connection)

Since discovering a new continent in 1492, Columbus never abandoned the belief that he had reached Asia. In fact, nothing in their experiences had led the first explorers to realize that they had come into contact with a vast and unrecorded continent, many times the size of Europe. Previously there had been no accounts, or even rumors, of the undknown peoples of this 'new' continent in European scholarly literature or discussion, or in popular chronicles.

Q) I was wondering where the underlined parts are connected. They look very unconnected.

Q1) "no accounts etc. etc." means "no accounts, or even rumors, of the unknown peoples of this 'new' continent". I thought it would be clearer to omit some of the verbiage to focus on the main structural point. In full, it means:

Previously there had been no accounts, or even rumors, of the unknown peoples of this 'new' continent in European scholarly literature or discussion.
