Interpretation...

Hi,
I've just reading a passage about two important cities in Australia,Melbourne and Sydney.I interpret these sentences in this way:
1)People in downtown Sydney are always on move, rushing to make contacts, cutting deals, and gaining influence.
They are always travelling, in hurry to communicate with new people, finalizing/making business deals and having effect on each other.
2)You have to dig a little to get under its surface.
You have to search to find information about it in order to learn it.
3)Sydney looks internationally for inspiration, but Melbourne tends to look regionally - to japan, for example.
Sydney is a cosmopolitan city so you can get variety of good ideas here. But the ideas in Melbourne are limited to native people like japan,it tends to keep it's identity.
4)Inhabitants live a life of ideas, discussion, and debate.
They like to have a life full of ideas..... .
Do all my interpretations correct?

Thanks

People in downtown Sydney are always on the move- Not so much travelling as busy or active . gaining influence- getting status/power so others will do what they want them to do, or help them get what they want. You have to dig a little to get under its surface- It's not immediately obvious, but once you get to know Melbourne you realize what a great place it is.

Thanks a million.
But I have some other questions,if you don't mind please help me.
Sydneysider means a resident of Sydney.
1- Can we add sider to any cities to get the same meaning or It's just for Sydney?
2-Why discussion and debate aren't plural here?Inhabitants live a life of ideas, discussion, and debate.

1- No, it's an unusual form and I don't know if it is used anywhere else. Some cities have a name for the residents, but they vary.
