Interpretation

Hi,

Even Mr. Cook in his recent speech said he was not predicting the demise of the PC industry, although he did say the iPad was cannibalizing some computer sales, more Windows PCs than the much smaller market for Macs. One category of PCs where that is especially true is netbooks, the inexpensive notebook computers that have had a steep decline in shipments in the last couple of years. “What the iPad is doing is taking growth away from the PC market that would have gone to a secondary or tertiary device,” said Mr. Dediu. “It’s not so much people are going to drop PCs. They’re going to add this additional device.”

I'm having a little trouble understanding the meaning of the first bold part. Let me give it a try first.

What the iPad is doing is taking growth away from the PC market that would have gone to a secondary or tertiary device.

People would have bought their second or third PC in addition to what they already had if the iPad had not been introduced in the market.

Q1) Is that a close paraphrase?

It’s not so much people are going to drop PCs. They’re going to add this additional device.

Q2) It is likely that people will continue to buy PCs. They are going to purchase the iPad as an additional device. Is this what those two sentences mean?

I'd appreciate your answer. Thank you.

Not being as computer-literate as I should be, I too have a little trouble interpreting "secondary or tertiary device", but I don't think it amounts to the purchase of more PCs.
