Interpolated Bracketed Material

I saw this in the paper the other day:


“[John Edmonds] was the one who pick-pocketed Evans on the subway.”


Do the brackets indicate that the original quote started as “He was the one ...”

Not necessarily. It could have said
'The albino arrested for riding a camel in the public library .was the one who pick-pocketed Evans on the subway.”

Many people would prefer was the one who picked Evans's pocket on the subway.
