Internet/chat language

Hi Everybody,

I hope this is the right forum.. I'm wondering if abbreviations in the Internet (to = 2, u = you, r = are, cu = see you etc.) are only used among younger people/teenagers or also among people in their 30s and 40s? Have to write an essay for school and would be glad if you could help me!

Looking forward to your answers! Thanks a lot!
