Internet

Can we now lowercase the word"internet?"
and can we lowercase "net" for internet?

Top answer

You do see lowercase, but I prefer to capitalise. Technically there is (or was) a difference between (an) "internet", meaning any connected group of networks, and (the) "Internet", meaning the global network that we all now share. In casual or everyday usage this distinction is not important since the latter would be understood anyway.
