International travel brings many advantages to the travelers and the countries visited. However, it also causes many problems to those countries. Do the problems caused by international travel outweigh the advantages?
In contemporary society, there are a growing number of people who travel abroad. While foreign travel brings several benefits, I believe that the drawbacks of international travel are greater than the advantages.
There are several positive impacts of tourism. First, travel enthusiasts have a chance to broaden their horizons. Exposure to different cultures and customs helps tourists embrace new cultures and gain a deeper understanding of the new lands they pay a visit. Second, the country's economy pay dividends from international travel. The economy reaps the benefits from foreign travel because of an increasing demand for food, accommodation and transport, which leads to job creation and income generation for the public. As a result, this alleviates unemployment and the locals have the ability to not only cover the cost of living but also significantly improve their well-being.
Despite aforementioned advantages, I believe that the downside of travel aboad is more significant. The first disadvantage is that an influx of foreign travellers results in environmental pollution. A number of tourists throw rubbish away on the beach and streets in irresponsible ways. There is no doubt that household waste from hotels and resorts is pumped into rivers and seas, which makes them heavily contaminated and harms natural habitats of aquatic life. In addition, the increasing demand for transport is also a major cause of air pollution. Another negative side is that travel can increase the odds of spreading infectious diseases into the local community. A typical example of this is the case in Vietnam in 2003. A Chinese tourist carrying H5N1 disease travelled to the country. As a consequence, many Vietnamese suffered from this disease and even died. Therefore, travel abroad might pose a threat of diseases to local areas.
In conclusion, although foreign travel has various benefits, I believe that it is more likely to have harmful impacts on the countries visited.
