International idioms for depression

Question

Hi,Can anyone help me? I am currently investigating the different international phrases that communicate depression. In english we may use, 'down in the dumps', and talk of 'feeling blue' or having the 'black dogs'.Could anyone please suggest any other phrases that are used to denote strong feelings of sadness?Many thanks in advance!Alison

I would simply caution not to confuse the blues with clinical depression. Feeling bad is normal. Being depressed is not. Depression is a disease, and while the West adheres to medical model treatments for it, which are still controversial, not all cultures adopt this approach. Depression is far less prevalent in Japan than in the U.S., and there are reasons for it. I worked in American mental health as a case manager for many years, and developed a mood disorder myself from the strain of trying to help sometimes dangerous and violent clients who somewhat accurately viewed my wheelchair use as a vulnerability to be exploited.
It is a cliché, but nut cases really can make you crazy if you let them .
