Intermingle

After walking through the intermingled branches of the two oak trees, we found ourselves in a vast grassy meadow.

Is this a correct expression? Can we use the verb "intermingle" for branches of trees?

Thanks,

'intermingled' seems a little unusual to me in that context, but not wrong. Other choices are 'intertwined' and 'interwoven'. CJ
