In recent years, more and more people are choosing to read e-books rather than paper books. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

People spare their free time in reading books. Many of them prefer to read electronic-books instead of paper books. In my opinion, the main benefits of this are: e-books are less expensive and accessible from multiple devices, that are far greater than its only disadvantage of health risk.

Most people buy e-books because they are inexpensive, and it is easy to access these from various gadgets, such as smartphones and laptops. The key reason of this is without incurring additional printing cost, publishers print only one copy of the book and make numerous soft copies which readers usually receive on their email address. In other words, readers can read at anytime they want at their preferable equipment. In the USA, for example, more than 90% of office workers subscribe soft copies of the magazine ‘The Economist’ so that they can read it while commuting from office, and it costs half of the total cost of printed version.

The only drawback of reading e-books is that it can affect the health of people significantly. That is to say that while reading paper books, eyes of people are not affected as it is easy to see and skim. Whereas, e-books are harmful for the eyes and brain since readers look continuously at screen the rays of which impacts eyes’ retina. In developed countries, for instance, cases of brain tumors and blindness are increasing rapidly as most people read e-books and do not want to study paper versions.

In conclusion, I think the benefits of reading e-books, which are inexpensive together with accessibility through various mediums, outweigh the possible drawback of health problems.
