First of all, the author claims that the most ranking systems put an emphasis on research work done by the faculty. He believes that it is hard that university reach high marks in ranking without an adequate base of research. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says the ranking systems used to take research in consideration but not anymore. Furthermore she points out that university are now paying more attention on teaching because ranking system are currently more concerned by teaching methods .

Secondly, the author states that research are the best way to gain wider recognition. He argues that if the university does not focus on research, it will be unlikely that they will produce public intellectual.
In contrast, the lecturer rebut this. she thinks that the most research are not understandable and they are not engaging research. She suggests that professors write more about teaching. She elaborates on this by mentioning professors should concentrate on the quality of their research not on the quantity.

Finally, the author mentions that students benefit from research. He is of the opinion that the professors who do research are more informed than others . The Lecturer , on the other hand, states that teaching and research are not related. She puts forth the idea by mentioning an example of her co-worker who does great research but he could not have an engaging lecture.
