Intact vs. In tact

Hello. I'm a little bit confused about the term "intact." Can it be written "in tact" as two words, or is that erroneous? For example:

Everything was demolished, except for that one piece that remained in tact.

Should that be as one word, i.e., intact?

Thanks.
