Instructor, would you accept this?

To emphasize the plural of a word as a word, I like single markers, not italics.

Would you accept the following?

His paragraph had too many 'whereas's and 'ass's in it.

Why? Because of the cusswords?

No, I didn't think of '***' in that sense,

What I mean is that I find the construction clumsy.
Formally, I would write
eg His paragraph uses the words 'whereas' and '***' too much.
