'My conscience feels best when I buy from companies that follow fair trade principles instead of them/ those that utilize sweat shops to make their goods'


The above is from the book I study. I wonder why there should be 'those' not 'them'.

The pronoun required is a subject pronoun: 'those [companies] that utilize...'.

(Cf: 'they utilize sweatshops' vs, e.g., 'companies utilize them'.)
