Instead of he/she?

Hi
When we want to say something which we mean both "he" and "she" can we use "they"
Is it better to say "he/she" or "they"?

Which sentence correct?
If a student doesn't listen to his/her student he/she will be failed.
If a student doesn't listen to their teacher, they will be failed.
