instead & however?

what's the defference between instead and however when used to express contrast?
"Revision is not just an afterthought that gets only as much time as you have at the end of an assignment.instead , it is a major stage of the writing process and writers revise every step of the way." why can't i replease instead with however?
"Mike doesn't study at all.Instead, he sits idle all day." can i say "Mike doesn't study at all. instead, he sits idle all day"? what's the difference?
or
"Instead, he did experiments to test and prove an idea before he was ready to accept it." can i say "however, he did experiments to..."? what's the difference?
