instead

Hi
Is the use of instead here OK?

We should not support cutting down of trees. Instead we should work to grow more trees.

The second sentence is OK. The first needs either 'the' before 'cutting' or the dropping of 'of'.

The first needs either 'the' before 'cutting' or the dropping of 'of'.
Could you please tell me why we need to drop the 'of'? Do we need 'the' because we are talking about a specific thing?

If you have We should not support cutting down trees, then cutting, having a direct object, is functioning in a verb-like way.

If you have We should not support the cutting down of trees, then cutting, having the before it and of after it is functioning in a noun-like way.
