Instead

I have heard 'instead of' but not just 'instead' Is this wrong the sentence?
I could have spent this time sleeping instead I had to wait up for you to come home.

Instead without of functions as an adverb. I could have spent this time sleeping instead I had to wait up for you to come home. I think this does not fit here.
