Which one is proper?

''Her attitude has always inspired me to look up to her and follow her footsteps.''

''Her attitude was always my inspiration to look up to her and follow her footsteps.''

Only the first one works. ("Follow in her footsteps" is also quite common.)

You could say "She was always my inspiration (period)"
or, "She was always my inspiration (to do something else)."

Somehow your second example seems a bit circular: She was my inspiration to be inspired by her.
