Inspire

Could I say this?:

-Her teaching of “From Renaissance to Enlightenment” have not only broadened the scope of John's knowledge but greatly inspired his interest in the subjects.

My friend say 'the choice of decor' or 'someone's paintings' might be inspired, and 'interest' can never be; but it sounds OK to me.
