Our environmental problems are sometimes seen as the result of the anti-nature ideologies of our culture. In The Myth of the Goddess, Anne Baring and Jules Cashford suggest that myths are “the fundamental inspiration of the evolution of consciousness.”They trace our problems back to the beginning of the Iron Age, around 1500 BCE, when hero myths began to arise showing individuals triumphing over monsters and dragons.
--- I'm not sure I understand the part in bold. What if I changed "of" into "for"?
"...that myths are “the fundamental inspiration FOR the evolution of consciousness.”
If I can substitute "of" with "for" than I understand it. Because then it means that the myths were a basic reason for the evolution of consciousness", if I understand it correctly.
