Insofar as

I wonder, if insofar as* is a synonym of *as far as. It sounds right to me, but I'm still not sure. For instance:

As far as I know, they went extinct a long time ago = Insofar as I know, they went extinct a long time ago

I am not exactly sure why, or whether others would agree. Google "Ngrams" shows that it is vastly less common than "as far as I know".

M-W dictionary gives a similar example (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/insofar%20as):

<insofar as I know, there are no other complications for obtaining the building permit>

To me personally, "insofar as I know" sounds unusual at best and unnatural at worst
