insist

1. He insisted that she (not) do it.

2. He insisted that she should(n't) do it.

3. He insisted that she didn't do it. He insisted that she did it.

4. He insisted that she should(n't) have done it.

5. He insisted that she would(n't) do it.

Are all the ten sentences correct? I think 1, 2, and 5 are spoken before the action of "do it", whether she would actually do it or not, it is the speaker's opinion of "do it"; sentence 3 emphasizes the allege, which the speaker believes is true, that she did it; and 4 is a comment made after she did it.

Did I interpret the sentences correctly? I am not sure of 1 and 2.

Is the punctuation in the above text correct? I appreciated your correction.

From your comments, I believe you understand the differences here. But just to review: The sentences in 1 are equivalent to those in 2. He said something that could be construed as his firm desire toward some action she might take, but had not yet taken, at the time he said this.

  • We might say that 1 and 2 contain envisioned actions which are the target of an implicit and indirect command.
  • In 3, he believed strongly she had (not) taken a certain action (and he expressed this belief in words).
